Graduate Writing Camps

Summer Graduate Writing Camps

Academic Support Network (ASN) is committed to supporting graduate students during their time at ASU. In addition to providing graduate writing tutoring, ASN offers unique summer camp experiences during the month of June!

What are the summer camps?

ASN's offers two summer camps during the month of June:

The Success in Graduate Writing Camp provides opportunities for ASU-enrolled graduate students to learn more about the academic writing and research demands of graduate school.

The Dissertation Writing Camp provides opportunities to support ASU doctoral candidates and ASU dissertation prospectus writers in achieving their writing goals.

Each camp has a $50 program fee to attend. Limited financial support is available.

Where are these summer camps held?

For Summer 2025, we will be offering our Success in Graduate Writing Camp online via Zoom and our Dissertation Writing Camp both online via Zoom and in person at the Tempe Campus.

How do these camps work?

Facilitated by ASN’s Writing Center staff, these camps guide students through the process of writing at the graduate level. Combining both instruction and support, the camps provide skills and strategies that prepare graduate students to navigate the demands of graduate-level writing.

Is support for attendance available?

Graduate Student Government (GSG) has made some funding available to help students offset the cost of the camp.  If you would like to be considered for some financial support for one or both camps, please complete the funding request application form no later than  Friday, May 17, 2024 by 3:00 p.m. Arizona time.

For more information about the camps, see the details below or watch our informational video.

Success in Graduate Writing Camp

What is it?

The Success in Graduate Writing Camp is a week-long curriculum designed to assist graduate-level ASU students in developing and enhancing academic writing and research skills. Graduate students currently enrolled in any ASU graduate certificate, master’s degree, or doctoral degree program are eligible to register.

The camp will be held online June 9-13, 2025 during the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. each day in Arizona time

How does it work?

The camp can be attended either live (in real-time), asynchronously, or a hybrid of the two. Live attendees will see the sessions presented by the ASN Writing Center staff and will have their questions answered in the live Q&A at the end of each session. All sessions are paired with self-paced activities that will help attendees apply their knowledge and identify further questions. The recordings of these sessions (excluding the live Q&A) will be uploaded to the camp’s Canvas page approximately 24 hours after the session ends. Attendees will have access to the Canvas page for one academic year. This way, attendees can revisit the recordings, activities, handouts, and other materials throughout the year as needed.

The camp offers an immersive online experience that provides a combination of real-time interactions and recorded modules using both Zoom and Canvas. Graduate students who attend the camp will have the opportunity to:

  • join live or view recordings of Zoom webinars
  • participate in live Q&A sessions
  • access additional activities and resources on Canvas
  • interact with peers inside and outside of their discipline
  • attend a live faculty panel
  • chat with Writing Center Coordinators

Dissertation Writing Camp

What is it?

The Dissertation Writing Camp is a week-long camp that offers ASU doctoral students dedicated time and space to write their prospectuses, dissertations, or applied projects.

This camp is available to any currently enrolled ASU doctoral students who have reached candidacy or who are currently writing their dissertation prospectuses.

This year, our camp will be offered in a dual-modality model from June 2-6, 2025, during the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Arizona time. This means that you can choose whether you participate in person on the Tempe campus or online via Zoom. The camp allows for synchronous in-person and online participation for those who are seeking real-time goal accountability and interactions.

How does it work?

The camp provides you with participation opportunities to support the achievement of your goals. You can tailor your experience depending on what activities are of interest to you and how much interaction with peers you are seeking. Camp attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop a writing plan for the week and your work going forward
  • Gain awareness of the resources available to you as an ASU graduate student
  • Use structured writing time to further your writing and resource process
  • Learn and adapt writing strategies to fit your writing needs
  • Build community with peers
