Discuss the purpose of arguments by learning how to define and identify some of the most common appeals in academic arguments. Students will also learn strategies for analyzing arguments used by other scholars.

Graduate Writing Workshop: The Art of Argument

In this workshop, presenters will reintroduce students to the art of argument by discussing strategies for writing an effective claim, finding appropriate evidence to support that claim, and sharing ways to evaluate the strength of an argument.

Producing Arguments

Students will build upon the concepts presented in the October 4 workshop, “Introduction to Arguments,” and discuss strategies for writing academic arguments related to any of their individual research questions or writing topics. Attending the previous workshop on arguments is certainly not a requirement to attend this one.

Writing in a group can bring many benefits and challenges. In this workshop, students will learn how to manage the group writing process, strategies for writing successfully together, and tips for avoiding common pitfalls. Come alone or with your group!
